The CTA and Pace reported scattered Ventra card reader outages on buses Friday evening.

Scattered reports began to come in about 6:30 p.m. that buses on multiple routes are experiencing outages, CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis said.

Lukidis said the CTA is working with the vendor to identify and correct the problem as quickly as possible, although buses continued to experience intermittent problems as of 10:15 p.m.

She said the reports are scattered, and that she had not received any indication that the problem is widespread. She also noted that rail systems were not affected by these outages. Similar scattered outages also affected a total of 68 Pace buses throughout Friday, spokesman Patrick Wilmot said. He said some riders would tap their cards to board buses and receive a “stop” message even though their cards were valid.

Wilmot said Ventra’s parent company, Cubic Transportation Systems, would reset the system overnight, and that it should be working properly by morning.

CTA President Forrest Claypool said earlier this week that the software for the card readers on all CTA buses would be updated by the end of the week.
