A person of interest is being questioned after a police officer was shot while trying to stop an armed robbery Sunday evening in Harvey.
Just before 6 p.m., Harvey police responded to a report of a robbery at a store at the intersection of 159th and Wood, according to a statement from the city of Harvey.
A single, armed suspect opened fire on the officers as soon as they arrived.
“A person of interest is being questioned by investigators,” the city said in a statement late Monday morning. It said no further comment would be made until charges have been approved.
Officer Robert Rolfe, a six-year Harvey police veteran, was shot twice. He remained in stable condition while preparing for surgery Monday, with family and fellow officers at his side at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, according to the statement.
Rolfe and his wife of five years have a 5-month-old son, the statement said.
