A 29-year-old man accused of beating a Chicago Police officer in the head with a baseball bat last weekend was charged with attempted murder, police announced Wednesday morning.
Tythia Thigpen was charged with attacking the officer who was exiting his police cruiser to break up a street fight in the West Englewood neighborhood about 12:40 a.m. Saturday, police said.
Thigpen was one of several men who broke away from the brawl in the 5700 block of South Winchester Avenue to attack the officer when he drove up, police said. No one else has been charged in the attack.
The officer, who was seriously wounded after he was clubbed in the head, was taken to Stroger Hospital, police said. He has since been released and is “recovering well,” police said.
Thigpen, lives in the same block where attack occurred, was charged Wednesday attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery of a police officer and aggravated battery while using a deadly weapon, Chicago Police said in a release.
He was scheduled to appear Wednesday in bond court.
