Federal law-enforcement authorities have once again raided a scrap-metal company as part of an ongoing investigation.

This time it was Serlin Iron & Metal Company on the Northwest Side, said Randall Samborn, a spokesman for the U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago.

Agents with the Internal Revenue Service’s Criminal Investigation Division executed a search warrant Thursday at Serlin’s offices at 1810 N Kilbourn, Samborn said.

That’s a day after IRS agents raided Acme Refining, a politically connected scrap-metal company, in Bridgeport.

No arrests were made at the site of either raid, and no charges have been filed, Samborn said Saturday. He said it’s an ongoing investigation and declined to comment further.

On its website, Serlin, a “full service metals recycling company” says it “has over 50 years of experience and expertise provided by the Kalter family.”

A woman who answered the phone at the Northbrook home of Mark and Evelyn Kalter, Serlin’s listed president and secretary, declined to comment Saturday. An attorney for the company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Brett Baron, a principal at Acme, declined to comment last week.

Acme has contributed nearly $200,000 to Illinois political campaigns since 1999, including $6,500 to Mayor Rahm Emanuel and a $5,000 contribution to Gov. Pat Quinn in June. And the 25th Ward Regular Democratic Organization, led by Ald. Danny Solis, has reported accepting a total of $32,500 from the company.

Baron has a 50 percent stake in a pending proposal for a new metal shredder in the 25th Ward, according to city documents.
