A 21-year-old woman has been charged with robbing a Morgan Park neighborhood beauty supply shop last month, allegedly stealing cash and thousands of dollars worth of hair extensions after pepper-spraying employees and beating them with a cell phone.
Timesha Brown and a man walked into the store in the 11100 block of South Western Avenue on three separate occasions on the morning of Monday June 3, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
On the third trip, just before noon, the man pulled out a handgun and Brown sprayed one of the two clerks, a 57-year-old woman, with pepper spray, Mirabelli said. The other clerk, a 21-year-old woman, also got pepper spray in her face, he said. One of the two victims had an allergic reaction to the spray, prosecutors said on Saturday.
The man then went behind the counter and grabbed $5,000 worth of hair extensions and $2,000 cash from the register, prosecutors said. One of the clerk’s purses—which contained money, credit cards and IDs—was also taken.
Brown was identified through surveillance photos and a photo array shown to the victims. She was arrested Friday morning by a Gresham District robbery/burglary team. Her alleged accomplice, a man believed to be between 18 and 22 years old, has not been arrested.
After her arrest Brown told police, “I let a goofy mother****** send me off to go into the beauty supply store and steal some Remy hair,” according to her arrest report. Remy is a high end brand of hair extensions.
The 5-foot-4, 160-pound Brown sprayed the victims with the pepper spray, then beat one of the victims with a cell phone, holding one of them down at one point.
The 57-year-old clerk was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, where she was treated and released, Mirabelli said. The younger clerk was treated at the scene.
Brown was ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bail Saturday.
She has no criminal history.
