A 5-year-old boy will need more surgeries as he recovers from being shot early Friday in a South Side park, his mother said.
“They don’t know exactly know when,” Jasmine Donald said, as she stepped outside the hospital for a cigarette and an orange soda.
Donald’s son Jaden was with his mother and three siblings at Cooper Park, 11712 S. Ada, in the West Pullman neighborhood when shooting began about 12:40 a.m.
Realizing the boy had been hit, Jasmine Donald lifted his shirt and saw he had been shot in the stomach, she told reporters gathered outside Advocate Christ Medical Center Friday morning.
After the shooting, she took her son to Metro South Medical Center, Jasmine Donald said. Jaden was then transferred to Christ where he underwent surgery.
Jaden was one of three people who were shot in the park, but his injuries were the most severe, police said.
Another bullet struck a 34-year-old man in the right wrist, police said. He was taken to Metro South Medical Center.
A third shooting victim, a 28-year-old man shot in the left shin, was also taken to Metro South Medical Center. He was listed in stable condition.
Officials said a male suspect is in police custody.
