Sentencing for Jesse Jackson Jr. and wife moved to Aug. 14

Updated: August 4, 2013 6:26AM

WASHINGTON — If Democrats were hoping to dominate the political stage next month with their campaign rallies at the Illinois State Fair, they might be disappointed.

Former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, ex-Ald. Sandi Jackson, are now scheduled to be sentenced on Aug. 14.

That just happens to be Governor’s Day at the fair, when Democrats from across Illinois head to Springfield for a full day of politicking and pep rallies that traditionally kick off the campaign season Downstate.

This year, much of that will certainly be eclipsed by the fate of the Jacksons, once rising Democratic stars in Chicago and Washington political circles.

They were originally scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday, but a federal judge changed her mind this week. U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson (no relation), wrote that the change was to “accommodate the Court . . . and that neither party has requested this postponement.”

On Tuesday, the court announced the new date was Aug. 14.

The former congressman faces up to four years in prison and his wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, up to 18 months.

The disgraced former politcal power couple pleaded guilty in February to looting Jesse Jackson Jr.’s campaign fund of $750,000. They will be sentenced in Washington, D.C., where the FBI investigation originated.

That all means Democrats at the State Fair in Springfield will have to work hard to attract their share of media attention.

“While Governor Quinn attends much of the Illinois State Fair, this is his day to host special guests, including former Illinois Governors,” according to the fair website.

They might want to be careful which former governors they invite.
