A 19-year-old man was charged with fatally shooting his younger brother who was a Hyde Park Academy basketball player, officials said.

Michael D. Whitney was charged Saturday with involuntary manslaughter of a family member in the death of Malcolm Whitney, 16. He also was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon.

Michael Whitney was playing with a handgun and pointed the weapon in the direction of his brother, shooting the sibling in the head Friday in their home in the 7500 block of South Kingston. His death was initially thought to be accidental, but the medical examiner’s office later ruled it a homicide.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 10:34 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

“[Malcolm Whitney] was a model student-athlete, any coach would be happy to have him. He had a 3.8 GPA,” said Hyde Park Academy basketball coach Antonne Samuels on Friday.
