NEW YORK – With closer Kevin Gregg unavailable after pitching four straight days, the Cubs went old school for the ninth inning on Sunday. And got old school results.

In a matter of minutes, Carlos Marmol turned a three-hit Cubs shutout into a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets when former Cub Marlon Byrd hit an upper-deck homer to left leading off the ninth and four batters later Kirk Nieuwenhuis slammed the upper-deck façade with a three-run shot for the game winner.

It snapped a three-game Cubs winning streak and ruined one of Matt Garza’s strongest starts since he returned last month from the disabled list.
