A Chicago Police officer shot a 22-year-old man who pointed a gun at officers during a foot chase late Tuesday on the Southeast Side, authorities said.
The man was shot in the ankle just before midnight in the 1600 block of East 83rd Street, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.
Before the chase, police had received reports of shots fired near 83rd and Stony Island about 11:45 p.m., Camden said.
On the way to the scene, officers were flagged down by several people who said they were riding in a vehicle when they were shot at by an occupant of another vehicle, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
A short while later, when officers curbed the suspected gunmen’s vehicle, a man with a gun in the passenger seat took off running.
Police ran after him and the man turned the gun on the officers, one of whom shot the man in the leg, police said.
The man was taken to Stroger Hospital, Camden said. His injury was not life-threatening.
No one else was injured in the shooting. The driver of the gunman’s vehicle was taken into custody.
Police recovered a 9 mm handgun from the scene.
