South Side man stabbed, tried to kill ex-boyfriend, police say

A South Side man stabbed his former boyfriend after arguing with him in Jackson Park earlier this month, Cook County prosecutors said Saturday.Ronald Smith, 49,

of the 7200 block of South Prairie, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery in the May 1 assault and was ordered held Saturday on $500,000 bail .

The 38-year-old victim suffered liver damage in the attack, underwent abdominal surgery and needed 44 staples to close the wound, prosecutors said.

The two men had dated until late April, according to court testimony.

On the day of the attack, they argued as the victim was riding a bike in the park and Smith was driving a car, according to prosecutors, who said Smith got out of his car, stabbed the other man and took off.

Police charged Smith on Thursday after picking him up in an unrelated aggravated battery investigation.
