Hadiya Pendleton’s mother said she and her 10-year-old son have been invited to attend this year’s Easter Egg Roll at the White House.
Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton said she plans to be in Washington, D.C. with her son, Nathaniel, on April 1 for the annual Easter celebration.
She said she didn’t recall exactly when the Obamas invited her family to the event, she simply recalled the “kindness of their invitation.”
Hadiya Pendleton was gunned down in the South Side’s Kenwood neighborhood in January less than a mile from the Obamas’ house. The 15-year-old who would become a national symbol of Chicago’s gun violence was killed shortly after she went to Washington to see President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Obama mentioned her murder in his State of the Union address attended by her parents last month, and Michelle Obama returned to Chicago to attend her funeral.
