One of the key reasons “The Bachelor” star Sean Lowe was tapped for the new season of “Dancing With the Stars” is that the fitness instructor/insurance agent is considered a good candidate for a serious career in the entertainment biz.

“The guy has total star power, and all the research points to him really connecting with a young female audience in a major way. And he also is liked by guys, too,” said a veteran “DWTS” insider. “He will likely continue to be involved with reality programming — probably in a hosting role — for some time to come.”

Though Lowe has said he did not go on “The Bachelor” to gain fame — and in fact dislikes all the attention — I’m told that’s a lot of hooey. “Sean revels in being the center of attention. He totally eats it up,” said a source from “The Bachelor.”

TOGETHER? OR NOT? While Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s spokesfolks continue to dodge questions about the couple, it’s unclear if Cyrus has indeed called off her engagement to the Aussie actor she met when they co-stared in “The Last Song” in 2010.

Despite many reports indicating the duo have split, sources tell me that while the couple are facing some issues, they have not — as yet — canceled their plans to wed.

A close friend of Hemsworth told me that while “Liam

is in Australia right now, it’s just to visit his family. He’s coming back to the U.S. very soon. … I hope they can work out their differences.”

LOVE BIRDS: Sounds like the romance between Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes continues to intensify. The actor has cast Mendes in a key female lead for “How To Catch a Monster,” a film he wrote and will shortly direct in Detroit. The actress will play a single mom with a teenage son who discovers a secret underwater world.

NO MORE ‘SPLASH’: Chuy, the diminutive Chelsea Handler sidekick on “Chelsea Lately,” has had to drop out of “Splash,” the diving competition show that debuts Tuesday on ABC. But Chuy wasn’t injured practicing his dives; he suffered a fracture in his heel bone when he jumped on a table in the lounge area near the pool, during the very first taping of “Splash.”

He will be replaced in the competition by soccer star Brandi Chastain.

JENNY’S CAUSE: Actress, model, Sun-Times Splash columnist and devoted Chicagoan Jenny McCarthy will host the sixth annual “Rescue Our Angels” fund-raiser. The April 23 fete at Studio Paris on West Hubbard will benefit a cause very near and dear to the South Side native. It’s for Generation Rescue, the non-profit which McCarthy serves as president to raise awareness of autism and generate funds to support families dealing with the diagnosis. McCarthy is understandably delighted that her own son, Evan, apparently has overcome his autism.

Along with McCarthy, other celebrities expected are Jacqueline and Chris Laurita (“The Real Housewives of New Jersey”), Doug Clerget (“The Bachelorette”), and former Miss Montana Alexis Wineman, who overcame her personal struggle with autism to compete for Miss America 2012.

SWEET NOTE: Over the years, we’ve heard lots of singers’ practices when it comes to saving their voices. Now Alicia Keys tells “Extra” her secret: gummy bears!

“You melt a handful of gummy bears in hot water, and something about the glycerin that really clears your voice,” Keys told the show’s Terri Seymour Tuesday.
