LA GRANGE — The pastor of the Second Baptist Church in La Grange has been charged with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a Class X felony.

The Rev. Donald R. Jung, 59, of La Grange was arrested following an investigation of allegations of inappropriate sexual contact between Jung and a juvenile.

La Grange police worked with criminal justice and medical authorities to collect and evaluate evidence, and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office approved the charge, according to a statement issued Friday.

The Rev. Lynn Lacey, also a minister at the church, said she was surprised by the allegation.

“That’s not the man I know. He’s an honest person,” Lacey said. “I’ve worked with him the last seven or eight years.”

Lacey said church leadership hasn’t called a meeting, but she expects members all are standing behind the pastor.

“We’re asking that people pray for him and his family,” she said. “The church is standing behind him.”

Lacey, who studied to become a minister and was ordained by Jung, said she has worked with him for at least seven years.

“He’s been my mentor the whole time,” she said.

Shawana McGee of La Grange, a former member of the church, said she was shocked by the news.

“I can’t believe it. I just don’t even have any words,” McGee said. “It is the farthest thing. I would never have imagined that.”

McGee, who operates the Caring Place for Kids afterschool program, said she studied to be a minister and was ordained by Jung in about 2004.

“I’ve just always thought he just seemed to have a special place in his heart for kids,” she said. “I can’t believe it.”

Bond is expected to be set Saturday at the Cook County Courthouse at 26th and California in Chicago.
