A man was critically injured when he jumped in front of a southbound Red Line train just after 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Chicago Avenue CTA station in the 800 block of South State Street, officials said.
The man jumped from the platform as the train approached the station, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
The man was pinned under the train, but he was “breathing and conscious” as Chicago Fire Department crews worked to free him, CTA spokesman Brian Steele said. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition, according to Fire Media Affairs.
Trains were rerouted after the incident and buses shuttled passengers between stations, but service was back to normal late Wednesday night.
