‘Icy and dangerous’ driving conditions as freezing rain hits Chicago

Updated: February 7, 2013 4:43PM

“Icy and dangerous” conditions made for a slippery commute in the Chicago area Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service warned that up to one-tenth of an inch of ice could coat roads and sidewalks Thursday morning. During that time, driving conditions could be slippery and “walkways could also turn to sheets of ice, making walking difficult and potentially dangerous,” the weather service said.

Early morning freezing rain already started switching over to light snow downtown by 10 a.m. A winter weather advisory was issued for McHenry and Lake counties from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday.

“Rain is expected to mix with and change over to wet snow late this afternoon or evening,” the weather service said, adding that up to 3 inches of snow could blanket the region in the evening.
