One firefighter was hurt battling an extra-alarm blaze at a vacant New City factory Monday night on the South Side.
The fire started at 5:39 p.m. in an abandoned factory at 4834 S. Halsted and was quickly elevated to a two-alarm blaze, according to Fire Media Affairs. The building is set back at least 200 feet from the street.
One firefighter was injured and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, the fire department said.
The building was “fire-resistant” and the blaze was contained in about 45 minutes, according to the fire department. The fire was extinguished about 6:55 p.m., according to reports.
The factory is about two miles southeast of a five-alarm fire that started on Jan. 24 and gutted a vacant warehouse after burning for days. It took more than 170 firefighters to extinguish that blaze, which was caused by an open flame.
The cause of Monday’s fire was not immediately available.
