1 dead, 8 wounded in overnight shootings

One person was dead and eight people were wounded in shootings on the city’s South and West sides since Monday evening, police said.
The most recent shooting happened about 6 a.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of West Wilcox Street in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. A 24-year-old man was shot multiple times and later died at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to officers at the Chicago Police Department’s News Affairs office.
About 4:20 a.m., a 24-year-old man was shot in the left bicep and lower back while standing on a sidewalk in the 4500 block of South California Avenue in the Brighton Park neighborhood, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
About 2:30 a.m., another 24-year-old man was shot, police said. He was walking in an alley in the 900 block of West 53rd Street when a gunman opened fire from a nearby vacant lot in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, Alfaro said. The man suffered gunshot wounds to both of his thighs and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition stabilized, Alfaro said.
About 9:48 p.m. on Monday, a 17-year-old boy was shot multiple times after a black sport-utility vehicle pulled up next to him in the 300 block of South Tripp Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood, police said. Two people got out of the SUV and walked up to the boy, who was then shot in the upper right chest, the right hand and the right ear, Alfaro said. The boy was listed in critical condition at Stroger Hospital, Alfaro said.
Police took three suspects into custody for the shooting, Alfaro said, and investigators were questioning them early Tuesday. No charges had been filed.
About 8:26 p.m., two men and a woman were shot in the 6200 block of South Rockwell Street, police said. A 23-year-old man was shot in the leg, a 31-year-old man was shot multiple times and a 19-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the chest, police said. None of their injuries were believed to be life-threatening, police said.
About 7:45 p.m., a 31-year-old man was shot in the leg in the 7200 block of South Campbell Avenue in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, police News Affairs Officer Ronald Gaines said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition stabilized, Gaines said.
About 6:30 p.m., another 31-year-old man was shot. The shooting happened in the 6000 block of South Indiana Avenue, police said, and his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
