A four-alarm fire at a warehouse in the South Deering neighborhoood was extinguised by 9:15 p.m. Thursday, according to Fire Media Affairs.

About 170 firefighters had brought in to battle the blaze at an isolated warehouse owned by South Shore Recycling Inc., authorities said.

The fire started Thursday evening in the 1,200-foot-by-200-foot warehouse at 11600 S. Burley near the Calumet River, according to Chicago Fire Media.

Because of concerns that the recycling warehouse could house toxic plastics, a No. 1 level hazmat response was issued, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. The warehouse also was thought to house electronics materials.

Early on, firefighters were having difficulty accessing fire hydrants near the secluded warehouse, Langford said. Officials tried to dispatch a fire department boat to help crews pump water after first responders had difficulty tapping into a steady stream of water, but snow, gusty winds and sleet prevented the use of the boat or helicopters to assist at the scene, officials said.

Instead, Langford said, hoses were being routed through several fire engines driven to midway points between the fire and fire hydrants to draw extra water.

A female firefighter suffered minor injuries when she tripped over a hose and was taken to Franciscan Saint Margaret Health Hospital in Hammond, Ind.
