Police end Home Depot barricade without making arrests

Updated: December 17, 2012 8:24AM

Authorities who evacuated and surrounded a Home Depot in south suburban Matteson, searching for two men connected to a robbery, ended the police action without making arrests Sunday night, authorities said.

Earlier Sunday evening, two men wearing ski masks walked into a Radio Shack at 4846 W. 211th Street and took money and electronic equipment, according to a Matteson police statement, which added that one of the men wielded a handgun.

A specially trained K-9 picked up the robbers’ scents, the statement said, and police followed the dog to a nearby Home Depot at 20808 Cicero Ave., where the scent was lost.

Matteson Mayor Andre Ashmore said police believed the men were hiding somewhere in the store. But authorities said the scene was cleared and the store closed for business Sunday night without police making any arrests.

Matteson police remained at the Home Depot as of 10:20 p.m., said Brian Mitchell, Matteson’s chief administrative officer.

No one was injured during the robbery, which occurred about 6:43 p.m., the police statement said.

Police say an investigation is ongoing.
