A man in his 50s died after being shot Sunday evening in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood just before 6 p.m. in the 6600 block of South Blackstone in what may have been a drive-by shooting, police said. He was the eighth person to be killed in violence in the city this weekend.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to head and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
The Chicago Transit Authority’s No. 67 bus has been rerouted in both directions as investigators collect details at the scene.
Seven men were shot to death, one was stabbed to death and another 28 people — six of them teenagers — were wounded across the city this weekend.
Earlier Sunday, a 17-year-old boy was shot in the lower back about 5:16 p.m. in the 7100 block of South Emerald Avenue, police said.
At 1:15 p.m., a 15-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen in the 8300 block of South Kingston. He was taken in “stable” condition to Comer Children’s Hospital, police said.
About 12:50 a.m., a woman was shot in a drive-by in the West Side Austin neighborhood.
She was sitting in a parked SUV at North Laramie and West Chicago when a dark-colored sedan drove by and someone inside opened fire, police said. The 20-year-old was shot in the back of the right leg and taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood in “stable” condition.
Less than two hours earlier, two people shot two men in a South Shore club Saturday night, then shot a woman down the street as they were running away, police said.
Both shooters walked into the club in the 1400 block of East 75th Street about 10:45 p.m. and opened fire on the patrons inside, said police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
Two men, both 20 years old, were shot inside the club, Alfaro said. The shooters ran out, but started firing again in the 7500 block of South Blackston Ave, leaving a woman shot in both legs and her buttocks.
They fled and are not in police custody early Sunday, Alfaro said.
The woman, 26, was initially taken in critical condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
One man suffered a gunshot wound to the left hand and a graze wound to the back, while the other man had gunshot wounds to the shoulder and leg, police said. Both were initially taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, but have since been stabilized.
The first fatal shooting of the weekend happened at 6:20 p.m. Friday in the 4200 block of South Wells Street. William Lee Martin, 30, of Springfield, was shot by an assailant who emerged from a vacant lot and opened fire at some men gathered on a porch. A bullet went through a window of the building, striking Martin and leaving three other men wounded, the police said.
