The Rice Report...

The big question: Who would Secretary of State Hillary Clinton like to get her job?

It ain’t embattled U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, who is dealing with the way she handled the terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, that led to the killing of U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans.

Sneed is told if Hillary had to choose between Rice and U.S. Sen. John Kerry, who is head of the Senate’s Foreign Relations Committee, she would prefer Kerry.

“Hillary is not close to Rice, who is tough — but is not the friendliest person,” said a top White House source. “And Hillary’s brief comment recently that Rice had done ‘a great job’ was considered underwhelming and tepid,” the source added.

“It would be hard for President Obama to back away from Rice, but he’s dealing with what’s known as “the Club of the Senate,” which includes powerful U.S. Sen. John McCain — a Republican — who is adamantly against Rice and a big supporter of Kerry’s.

Royal ranting...

What’s in a name: Kate Middleton, a k a the Duchess of Cambridge, just disclosed her nickname when she was a child came from her prep school’s pet guinea pigs. “There was one called Pip and one called Squeak, so my sister was called Pip and I was Squeak,” she said. Now, aren’t you glad you read this column?

The Quinn Bin...

Ya can’t win: Gov. Pat Quinn, who listens to his own drummer to protect the people of Illinois, banned paper towels from the state office bathrooms at the Thompson Center in order to do the “green” thing — and had air hand dryers installed. ◆The result: People who used the paper towels to exit bathrooms without touching the door complained. ◆The result: A contraption called “StepNpull” has now been purchased and attached to every bathroom door to solve the germy knob problem.

Be still my tongue.

Lassie’s Dead!!!

Bow Ow! The last dog to play Lassie in a movie — a collie named “Mason,” who lived on a Collie breeding farm in northern Minnesota, died Thanksgiving Day. ◆Stat chat... The 9-year-old Collie, who starred in the 2006 movie “Lassie” (natch), was the first dog to play Lassie who wasn’t directly related to the original heroic canine. The film, which was shot in Ireland, featured actors Peter O’Toole and Samantha Morton.

Small town USA...

Leave it to a gaggle of residents of the North Shore’s tony Winnetka, who marched Friday to protest a Petco store which may locate near their favorite boutique pet store called Noah’s Ark.

The irrepressible Angie DeMars, who has owned Noah’s Ark for the past 10 years, claims she was not spearheading the protest — but was gratified by word 800 residents had signed a petition to protect her business “from being cannibalized if Petco gets a lease,” she said.

At last peek, Angie’s fans were armed with signs en route to the Village Hall — for their pet angel who pays for pet adoptions and village animal control issues out of her own pocket — and holds the hands of her customers when their animal has to be euthanized.

Sneed hears longtime Waukegan State Sen. Terry Link is running for mayor of his hometown — but only for one term.

◆ To wit: “I’m concerned about the exodus of jobs and businesses — only to see the same businesses open shop in wealthier parts of Lake County,” Link told Sneed. “I have a beautiful home here and I’ve seen property values decline. I also am a guy who can get Chicago, Springfield and Washington to return my phone calls,” he said.

◆ Ka-ching? Is Link, who’s been a leading voice on bringing a casino to the area, planning to use any additional power to leverage a license to Waukegan?

◆ Answer: “Nope. Absolutely not.”
