Woman, 76, dies after being struck by a Megabus

Updated: September 9, 2012 6:17AM

A Megabus’ mirror struck a woman in the head, fatally injuring her just yards
from her West Loop home Tuesday afternoon, police said.

The bus was attempting to make a left turn from South Canal to West Adams, next to Union Station, when it struck Donna Halstead, 76, walking north on Canal in the crosswalk at 2:17 p.m., officials said.

The side mirror of the bus hit Halstead, causing her to fall and hit her head, officials said.

Witness Tyrone Johnson, 49, said Halstead, who is retired, was a friend who lived in a building in the 100 block of South Canal, and she
was returning from taking lunch to her son across the street at Union Station, where he works, when she was hit.

She had kidded Johnson, “Hey Tyrone — I like your hat, but that do-rag has got to go,” before crossing the street on her way to the station, Johnson said.

On her way back, she was struck by the passenger side mirror of the bus and knocked hard to the street, bleeding from her head, he said.

The bus driver, Shemeka Hudson, 32, of the 1400 block of West 71st Place, was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian, but the investigation was continuing and she could face further charges, officials said.

Megabus spokeswoman Amanda Byers said there were no passengers on the bus, and all arrivals and departures would continue to operate on schedule.

“We are saddened to report this tragic incident,” Dale Moser, president and COO of Megabus, said in a statement.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved, particularly the family of the deceased woman,” the statement said.

It was the second serious crash involving a Megabus in a week.

On Thursday, a University of Missouri student was killed when a Megabus crashed in Downstate Litchfield.
