Is it a political pot plot? A bit of reefer madness?
Sneed has learned a monumental seizure of marijuana — about 8 tons en route from Mexico via Texas —was intercepted early Tuesday evening by the Chicago Police Department/DEA Strike Force in the Chicago area.
But why the wait for the usual dog-and-pony show the next day promoting the mega bust?
Was a news conference not held for fear of a buzz kill: a possible threat to the passage of the controversial city pot ordinance decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana being held Wednesday morning?
(Passage of the ordinance was strongly backed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.)
“This kind of monumental seizure is showcased, not swept under the rug,” said a Sneed tipster.
† The stats: Sneed hears no arrests were made. The cargo had been tracked all the way to Chicago by the Strike Force.
† The upshot: Sneed is told a Strike Force news conference attended by fed officials and McCarthy is now scheduled Thursday morning.
† The flip side: “The reason the press conference was not held Wednesday morning was because the police superintendent was not available then,” said a police source.
Dateline: The dirty, filthy, germ infested line: Sneed has learned a major shocker encountered by investigators probing Cook County’s “House of Horrors” medical examiner’s office was a blood-soaked towel.
† To wit: The towel was tossed atop a CAT scan used to examine rotting cadavers.
† The shocker: The infamous cloth was a universal handwipe used by medical personnel to wipe their bloody, bodily fluid doused hands after handling the bodies being scanned.
“You’d think one of the 97 people who work at the morgue would be worried about their own health working in an environment like that,” said a Sneed source familiar with the nightmare at the morgue.
The Jackson File...
Ald. Sandi Jackson, wife of Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. — who is now on a medical leave of absence, is privately telling friends she’s doing “OK” but not disclosing where her husband is now staying.
† Translation: He’s being “treated” outside the home.
In case you missed it, former Veep Dick Cheney’s gay daughter, Mary, exchanged wedding vows with her long-time partner Heather Poe last Friday inWashington, D.C.
President Obama’s top political campaign strategist David Axelrod recently tweeted: “Beautiful, sunny day at The Cell. Sox & Brewers in scoreless tie after seven. Kid at my side. And no negative ads out here. Perfect!”
Tweet Treat II...
Reality star Kristin Cavallari, who is expecting Jay Culter’s bundle of joy, tweets: “At a lake house all week with family ???bronzing this massive belly ha.”
There ya go.
The Edwards File...
It should come as no surprise Rielle Hunter, the memoir-writing mistress, and her lover— former U.S. Sen. John Edwards — are kaput.
†The upshot: Hunter, whose book publicist was tripping all over the place when Sneed asked recently if the couple was still together —now claims they ended their relationship last week.
“We are no longer a couple,” Rielle is bleating to the press.
†The sureshot: How much you wanna bet Edwards didn’t want to rile the wacky Rielle during the pendency of his corruption trial? Now that’s done, so is she.
A Wade report ...
Is Miami Heat basketball star/Chicago native Dwyane Wade’s ex-wife, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, 30 — who was arrested and charged with attempted child abduction of their two sons, ages 10 and 5, over Father’s Day weekend — training to defend herself in court?
Sneed hears Funches-Wade is a student at John Marshall Law School and was recently featured on the school’s website for winning an award.
Today’s birthdays: Kathy Bates (right), Mel Brooks, John Cusack, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mark Grace and Lani Myron. All ageless, priceless and sometimes useless.
