A 28-year-old man was charged with DUI after an SUV crashed into a party bus on the Eisenhower Expressway, hospitalizing at least 19 people early Tuesday.

The SUV driver, Andy Darrell Taylor, of Chicago was charged with DUI, according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper.

The accident happened about 2:38 a.m. on inbound Interstate 290 near Ashland Avenue and involved an SUV and a “party bus” carrying people from area bars, State Police District Chicago Trooper Ivan Bukaczyk said.

Inbound lanes were closed until about 3:45 a.m. as crews cleared the scene, Bukaczyk said.

The SUV, a Ford Expedition, hit the left side of the bus, which was carrying revelers visiting area bars, police said.

Nineteen people were taken to area hospitals, according to Fire Media Affairs -- two in serious-to-critical condition, 11 in fair-to-serious condition and six in good condition.

None of them appeared to have life-threatening injuries, Bukaczyk said. He said two people went to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County but did not know where the others were taken.

At least 35 people were on the white, unmarked bus, and there were possibly more on board then were legally allowed, according to a state trooper on scene.

One of the riders, 24-year-old Kyesha Shaw, said people on the bus were standing, drinking and dancing when the SUV struck it, adding that glass beer and liquor bottles went flying after the impact.

“It was just a big boom,” she said.

The Expedition suffered heavy front-end damage.

Four people were riding in the Expedition, though Bukaczyk did not know whether they were among those hospitalized.

An EMS Plan 2 was called, which automatically sends 10 ambulances to the scene.

Taylor is expected in appear in court July 26, according to the ISP District Chicago troooper.
