Chicago Police are investigating the apparent theft of lug nuts from the wheels of squad cars in the Morgan Park Police District’s parking lot on the Southwest Side, officials said Saturday.
Officers have noticed lug nuts were missing from several cars over the past week. No officers have become involved in accidents because of the apparent vandalism, officials said.
“It’s not funny,” one Morgan Park District officer said Saturday. “You could lose control and run into a building or a person or another car.”
Last week, officers also discovered a concrete slab in the Morgan Park District parking lot in the 1900 block of West Monterey. The slab was painted with a symbol representing anarchy, a source said.
Anarchists are expected to play a role in demonstrations against the NATO summit here on the weekend of May 19, but police said they haven’t identified anyone involved in the Morgan Park incidents.
Sources said officers have discovered other cars with missing lug nuts in other districts over the past year, but the apparent vandalism didn’t cause accidents in those cases, either.
