A South Side man was ordered held without bail Wednesday for shooting and injuring a Chicago Police officer over the weekend.
Cortez Ross, 21, of the 4300 block of South Champlain, is facing attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery charges.
Prosecutors said at 4 p.m. Sunday, three officers were on patrol when they received a call of
a man with a gun at 68th and Stony Island. When the officers arrived on the scene, they saw Ross and two others, assistant Cook County state’s attorney Sean O’Callaghan said.
One of those in the group the officers observed yelled “police” and Ross began running, O’Callaghan said.
Two of the officers then exited their squad car and gave chase while the other officer tried to tail Ross in the police vehicle, O’Callaghan said.
The officer driving the car eventually cut off Ross in the 6700 block of East End Avenue. Ross began running toward the officers on foot, O’Callaghan said.
Ross was tackled to the ground and allegedly began struggling with the officers.
When the officers tried to get handcuffs on Ross, one cop noticed Ross had a weapon and yelled out “gun,” O’Callaghan said.
Soon after Ross fired, striking one officer in the left hand, prosecutors said.
He refused to drop the weapon and another officer shot Ross in the chest, O’Callaghan said.
Ross’ gun, a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun, was still loaded with eight additional rounds, O’Callaghan said.
The officer was treated and released from an area hospital.
Another officer was taken to the hospital because he complained of temporary hearing loss as a result of the shooting, officials said. The officer was also bleeding in his ear, O’Callaghan said.
