Facebook voters preferred “Madelyn” over “McKenna,” so that’s what a Crystal Lake couple named their 7-pound, 14-ounce daughter when she was born early Tuesday.

Not that it was a tough call for Madelyn’s dad, Dave Meske.

“That’s my favorite — I’m very happy about it,” Meske said Wednesday.

In the fall, he and wife Lindsey launched a Facebook poll to help break the deadlock they’d hit over what to name their forthcoming second daughter. Dave, 27, liked Madelyn; while Lindsey, 24, favored McKenna.

To end the impasse, the couple turned to Facebook, adding two other names they liked (Emily and Addilyne), then letting anyone who cared to vote pick their favorite name — and publicly promising to abide by the results.

The 2-1/2-month survey ended early Tuesday, when Lindsey Meske was induced to deliver the baby. In all, more than 4,200 people from around the world cast votes for the baby’s name.

Madelyn won with 1,310 votes, edging Emily, which got 1,265 votes. McKenna trailed with 938 votes, and Addilyne drew 687 votes.

“I’m really OK with it,” said Lindsey, who had lobbied friends and family members to vote for McKenna.

The number of people who voted was a bit of a shock to the parents — as was the fact that people from as far as Iceland, Australia, Germany and New Zealand cast votes.

The couple, who already have a 4-year-old daughter, Brianna, said they have no regrets about the way they named their new baby girl.

“It was fun,” said Dave Meske, who is the art director for a novelty company. “It was a great little experience.”

He and his wife probably will wait a while to tell their little girl how she was named. “Maybe when she’s in junior high and understands technology a little bit,” said Dave, adding, “With my luck, that might be when she’s in kindergarten.”

The Meskes’ naming issues aren’t totally resolved.

“We’re still debating the middle name,” Dave said.

Maybe it’ll be McKenna, though they’re also considering Rae — so if they have another baby they still could name her McKenna, Dave said.
