Taxicab fares have been rising.
While the cost of entering a cab, the flag pull, has been $2.25 since 2005, starting in 2008, the city allowed cabs to collect a $1 fuel surcharge for periods when gasoline prices hit and stayed at certain high levels. That translated into a 44.4 percent price increase. The surcharge has been in effect 74 percent of the time since it was implemented, and the higher cost won’t be going away. This month the surcharge was swapped to become a permanent part of the flag pull.
